World Famous, World Renowned

The World Heritage list is reserved for those natural wonders that are the most precious and wondrous that exist anywhere on the planet. And the Great Barrier Reef has pride of place on that list.

That’s because it is hands down the largest, most diverse coral reef system that can be found anywhere. Its scale is immense, stretching from the northernmost reaches of Cape York all the way down to Bundaberg, thousands of kilometres in the south.

By The Numbers

One thing that the photos can’t fully explain is the numbers. The Great Barrier Reef name actually covers over 3000 separate, interlocking reefs that have grown and developed alongside one another for many thousands of years and the waves from the Pacific Ocean and the Coral Sea roll over them.

In addition to those 3000 shallow and deep water reefs are almost 1000 islands dotted throughout the crystal clear blue waters of the Whitsundays. And nestled in those reefs and around those islands are examples of marine life from tiny clownfish to sleek manta rays to the gentle giants of the ocean in the form of the silent and graceful whales that migrate through the warm waters at different parts of the year.
