If you’ve stepped foot on any beach without thongs on, you’ll know that the sun gets pretty hot underfoot. Not at Whitehaven. One of the most curious and remarked upon features of this beach is the fact that the sand is cool to the touch, even on the warmest north Queensland days.

How is that possible?

It’s because of the silica. Most of the sand on this iconic beach is made up of silica. That’s why the almost seven kilometres of pure white sand is the colour it is, and also why it actually doesn’t absorb heat.
