HILL INLET & HILL INLET LOOKOUT

You know those perfect panorama photographs? The kind that are found framed on the walls of homes or in pride of place in a boardroom or high-end restaurant? They typically have one thing in common: the audible ‘wow’that people let out when they see them.

Photographs of Hill Inlet taken from Hill Inlet Lookout get that reaction. And the sweeping expanse of pristine white sand beach, narrow, greenery-topped hills all surrounded by turquoise water as far as the eye can see can only be captured to its full extent by the widest possible camera angle.

Where is Hill Inlet?

You might not have heard of Hill Inlet. But you’ve almost certainly heard of Whitehaven Beach. Hill Inlet is the near neighbour of the world-renowned beach. It provides beach access and, as its name suggests, a place for watercraft to temporarily moor while their guests take in the stunning views.

Hill Inlet Lookout

Hill Inlet Lookout is a short walk up a fairly gentle hill above the inlet and the beach. Sharp-eyed walkers will be able to spot plenty of local wildlife in the trees around the well-maintained walking track on their wander up.

And that walk is well worth it. Hill Inlet Lookout provides those perfect views of everything underneath it. That includes almost 10 kilometres of pristine white sandy beaches. It also takes in the ever-shifting sand bars and shallow water of the inlet. Those sand bars and shallow water also provide the opportunity for you to see a unique moment in time, since the sandbars are formed and reformed every day by the tide.

Add to that the fact that the light is totally different at different times of day, which causes the water to change colour and hue constantly, and you’ve stumbled upon a view that is unique every single day.
