Heart Reef
If you’ve ever seen a post on social media for Queensland’s incredible tourism destinations, or if you know someone who’s been to the Great Barrier Reef, chances are you’ve seen Heart Reef.
Among the tens of thousands of kilometres of reef, the hundreds of islands and the endless acres of clear, azure, turquoise and aquamarine water, there is a single, perfectly formed knot of coral.
And that knot of coral, in the shape of a heart, has probably become one of the most photographed sections of the Reef.
The Origins of Heart Reef
Heart Reef has probably been in existence for thousands of years, the result of the slow-moving expansion of living organisms of coral beneath the ocean waves. The warm water, ideal tidal conditions of shallow water and the residence of thousands of marine animals all contribute to a vibrant coral-based ecosystem.
But it’s only been about 40 years since we humans found this hidden gem tucked away in the vast expanse of the Great Barrier Reef.
In fact, it was a local pilot flying for Air Whitsundays who stumbled across it during a flight in 1975. It didn’t take long for him and others to return with good quality cameras, and now images of the distinctive Heart Shaped reef are found worldwide.
It’s not hard to imagine why Heart Reef has been the site of hundreds of proposals over the years. A flyover of a natural wonder like this has to be a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a once in a lifetime gesture!
The Reef itself is protected, and no diving or snorkelling can take place there.
